Are you tired of not understanding your light hydrocarbons (HCs) through traditional pyrolysis techniques? At MCWL Paladin Geological, we offer on-site sampling for near real-time (NRT) analysis of your lighter hydrocarbons (up to C18) with our proprietary technology, the Tight Oil Analyzer (TOA), designed specifically for tight rock reservoirs drilled with water-based muds.
With no more than 5 minutes between collection time and a 20-minute cycle time (including cooling), our TOA is able to provide you with fast and accurate pyrolysis data to help you better understand your producible zones in NRT.
By applying low-temperature pyrolysis, we are able to detect the S0 peak that is typically lost during traditional Source Rock Pyrolysis (SRP) techniques. The S0 peak breaks into two main phases: T0 and T1 where T0 represents the light gas/condensates and T1 represents light (moveable) oil. T2 represents the heavier oil components that are equivalent to S1 in traditional SRP techniques. Unlike traditional SRP, the TOA is able to detect pay zones that are not dependent on organic materials being present (i.e., TOC), which makes it adapt to finding oil reservoirs more efficiently.

Below is a case study completed by MCWL in the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma, where we used the TOA on a pilot well to distinguish multiple benchmarks and pay zones. The light green curve, T0, shows the light HC components that are key for sweet spot identification. The red curve (T1) shows light oil and purple curve (T2) shows the heavier oil components (S1 equivalent).
From this study, we were able to identify several pay zones as highlighted below, with the best zone identified at the base of the Miss Lime, where we had the highest T0. However, we found the thickest pay zone in the middle Miss Lime section. The Woodford show is identified as much heavier oil along with the Bois d’Arc than the prospective Mississippian Lime pay zones. Both the Sylvan and Viola shows are much lower than the prolific Miss Lime shows.
In summary, the TOA was able to successfully vertically delineate several pay zones during drilling. Results interpreted in real-time allow for quick determination of production well placement maximizing oil & gas recovery and economics.
